Click Threshold Rules

In Platform Usage · Updated (1 hours ago)

Alongside ClickPatrol's automatic detection, you can set your own Click Threshold rules to block IPs based on how often they click your ads. This gives you a simple, rule-based safety net on top of ClickPatrol's classification: if an IP clicks more than you allow within a set time window, it is blocked automatically. You manage these rules under Configuration → Settings.

What are Click Threshold rules?#

A Click Threshold rule defines how many clicks a single IP is allowed within a given time window before it gets blocked. For example, you can block an IP if it clicks an ad 3 times in 10 minutes. Each rule works independently, and an IP that breaks any of your rules is blocked automatically.

You can add up to 6 rules, so you can combine a short, aggressive window with a longer one. A common setup is a tight rule for burst clicking (for example, 3 clicks in 10 minutes) plus a broader rule for repeat clickers over time (for example, 5 clicks in 1 day).

How it works with ClickPatrol's detection#

ClickPatrol already analyzes every click using hundreds of signals and blocks suspicious traffic automatically. Click Threshold rules add a straightforward, threshold-based layer on top of that: they act purely on click frequency per IP. If an IP exceeds the number of clicks you allow within the time window, it is added to your block list without needing any further analysis.

Where to find Click Threshold rules#

  1. Log in to your ClickPatrol dashboard.
  2. Go to Configuration in the sidebar.
  3. Open the Settings tab.
  4. Scroll to the Click Threshold section.

Create a rule#

  1. In the Click Threshold section, click + New Rule.
  2. Under Allow up to, enter the number of clicks a single IP is allowed.
  3. Under within, enter the length of the time window.
  4. Select the time unit (for example, Minutes or Days).
  5. Repeat to add more rules, up to a maximum of 6.
  6. Click Save All Rules in the top right to apply your changes.

As an example, a rule set to Allow up to 3 clicks within 10 Minutes will block any IP that clicks more than 3 times within a 10-minute window.

Edit or remove a rule#

  • To change a rule, update its values directly in the fields and click Save All Rules.
  • To delete a rule, click Remove next to it, then click Save All Rules to confirm.

Your changes only take effect once you save, so always click Save All Rules after adding, editing, or removing a rule.

Tip

Set your thresholds carefully. Real users sometimes click the same ad more than once, so avoid limits that are too strict or you risk blocking legitimate visitors. Start with generous thresholds, review your traffic, and tighten the rules over time if you see repeated clicking from the same IPs.
