How to Create Custom Audiences
Custom Audiences allow you to segment your traffic based on specific criteria detected by ClickPatrol. By defining these audiences, you can trigger specific events that can be utilized in your marketing tools for precise targeting or exclusion.
⚠️ Prerequisite: ClickPatrol Tag Installation#
Before you begin: Please ensure that the ClickPatrol Tag is correctly installed and active on your website.
- Without the tag, ClickPatrol cannot fire the events required to build these audiences.
- If you haven't installed the tag yet, please refer to our Installation Guide.
Step-by-Step Guide#
- Navigate to Audience Settings Go to the Audience section in your dashboard sidebar.
- Click Add Audience.
- Define Audience Details
- Name: Give your audience a clear, descriptive name (e.g., "High Risk Traffic" or "Verified Humans").
- Event: Enter the specific Event Name you want to trigger. This is the string that will be pushed to the data layer when a visitor matches your criteria (e.g., cp_audience_match).
- Description: Add a short description to help team members understand the purpose of this audience.
- Logic: Choose "And" (all conditions must be met) or create complex logic groups.
- Criterion: Select the specific parameter you wish to filter by (e.g., Device Type, IP Score, Location).
- Operator: Choose the relationship (e.g., Is, Contains, Is Not).
- Value: Select or enter the value that defines the segment.
- Click the + icon to add additional criteria if needed.
Example: How you could use this with Google Analytics 4 (GA4) & Tag Manager#
Creating the audience in ClickPatrol is just the first step. The real power lies in connecting this data to your marketing stack.
The Workflow:
- ClickPatrol detects a user matching your criteria and fires the Event you defined above.
- Google Tag Manager (GTM) listens for this specific event.
- GA4 receives the event from GTM.
Strategic Application: Once the data is in GA4, you can build GA4 Audiences. These can be synced with Google Ads and other marketing platforms to optimize your ad spend:
- Exclusion (Negative Audiences): Create an audience for "Suspicious Traffic" or "Bots" based on ClickPatrol data. Exclude this audience from your Google Ads campaigns to stop wasting money on invalid clicks.
- Targeting (Retargeting): Create an audience for "High-Quality Users." Focus your budget on retargeting these specific users who have passed ClickPatrol's validation checks.
