Google Ads Refunds

In Platform Usage · Updated (1 months ago)

As a Google Certified Click Tracker, ClickPatrol does more than just block bots; we help you recover ad spend that has already been wasted. Our system automatically submits detailed reports of invalid traffic to Google on your behalf.

Here is exactly how the refund process works and where you can find the credits.

1. The Two Types of Refunds#

When ClickPatrol flags an invalid click, the refund process can happen in two ways:

A. Real-time / Automatic Refunds When we signal invalid traffic, Google’s algorithms often recognize and validate this data immediately.

  • Result: Google filters out these clicks before you are even billed, or credits the amount back to your daily budget instantly.
  • Impact: You get more valid clicks for your daily budget on the same day.

B. Retroactive / Manual Review Refunds Clicks that are suspicious but not immediately verified by Google go into a "manual review" queue. ClickPatrol provides the necessary evidence (timestamps, IP data, device fingerprints) to support this review.

  • Timeline: This investigation process typically takes about 4 to 8 weeks.
  • Success Rate: On average, roughly 5% of these contested clicks are eventually approved and refunded.

2. How to Check Your Refunds#

Refunds from Google do not appear in the ClickPatrol dashboard. They appear directly in your Google Ads billing section.

To see how much you have been refunded:

  1. Log in to Google Ads.
  2. Go to Billing > Transactions (or Billing > Documents).
  3. Look for line items labeled "Invalid Activity" or "Invalid Clicks".
  4. These credits are deducted from your monthly invoice or added to your account balance.

3. Important Expectations#

  • Not 100% Guaranteed: While ClickPatrol detects almost all click fraud traffic, Google has its own strict definition of "Invalid Activity." They may not agree with every single flag. Historically, a small percentage of submitted manual claims result in a monetary refund.
  • Separation of Data: These refunds are separate from the "Predicted Budget Reallocation" shown on your ClickPatrol dashboard. The dashboard shows what we saved you (by blocking), while the Google invoice shows what was returned to you.

4. The "Real Win": Algorithm Optimization#

While receiving a credit on your invoice is a nice bonus, the most significant financial impact comes from improving your campaign signals.

When ClickPatrol reports invalid traffic, we are effectively "retraining" Google's Smart Bidding algorithms (like Performance Max, Target CPA, or ROAS).

  • Cleaner Signals: By explicitly telling Google which clicks were "bad," the algorithm stops trying to optimize for bots and scrapers.
  • Efficiency: This forces the algorithm to focus your budget exclusively on humans with genuine intent.

The bottom line: The long-term efficiency gains from a cleaner algorithm far outweigh the one-time cash value of a refund.
